LGBTQ INCLUSION STRATEGIES FOR K-12 SCHOOLS

Schools are often hostile, unsafe places for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students. According to the 2019 GLSEN National School Climate Survey, nearly 3 in 5 LGBTQ students felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and over half were verbally harassed due to their gender. This same research suggests data-driven strategies all schools should be encouraged to implement: professional development for educators, comprehensive policies, inclusive curriculum and student clubs (gender and sexuality alliances or GSAs).

LGBTQ Cultural Competency for Service Providers

Everyone can benefit from accurate knowledge about how to treat others with dignity and respect, especially the service providers who we trust to work with the public. Our society’s tradition of transphobia, homophobia and other gender biases create barriers to high-quality, compassionate care. Customer service professionals, health providers, community workers, government agency staff and more, will all encounter someone who either is, or may be perceived as LGBTQ, and may not have the proper knowledge to confidently serve them.

CAPACITY BUILDING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR NONPROFITS

Nonprofits and other community-based organizations work tirelessly to address the gaps in services for our country’s most marginalized. Too often, nonprofit and community leaders, especially Black, queer and trans-led orgs, struggle with having innovative ideas without any trusted guidance. Sometimes, a small amount of justice-informed and culturally relevant support with fundraising, operations, programs, outreach or board governance can make the difference.

GUEST SPEAKING AND CONFERENCES

Conferences, workshops, panels and other special events are excellent ways to inspire and inform a large group of stakeholders. An effective, passionate and experienced speaker can add a personal and practical layer to your special event.

GROUP FACILITATION

Ineffective meetings are an uncomfortable waste of time, energy and passion. Whether it’s a planning retreat, brainstorming session or restorative conference to resolve conflict, any time a group of people are gathered to achieve a goal, an engaging and well-organized facilitator can ensure your group detangles its ideas into actionable steps.

I would like to tell you how impressed I was with your educational speaking at my Worcester County School in-service training. The conversation was professional and passionate. It definitely pushed into an area that was uncomfortable at times, but needed discussed. At the end, you showed the statistics, which really got to me as they were sobering. Again I respect your passion and it is well worth it if just one person’s life is saved, just from the kindness of one bus driver who was educated by you.

Jabari played a crucial role in the success of our school’s Gender & Sexuality Alliance at a time when we were not supported by leadership. As the faculty advisor I had to find a way to advocate for LGBTQIA students in spite of this. Jabari equipped me with the knowledge and skills to do so. He shared his expertise on laws and protections for our kids. He provided purposeful and enjoyable training on how to run an effective GSA. He ensured that we had advocates at our club meetings to empower our members. His services were invaluable and so many students had a safer and more inclusive experience thanks to him. Jabari is also a wonderful person- funny, charismatic, and caring. Working with him was always such a joy.

As a trans woman of color who would’ve never thought Baltimore City would have a shelter-based program designed and led for TGLBQ community, Jabari has helped not only lift and amplify the voices of black trans women but helped design and create the infrastructures that built the foundation for an organization that provides housing, a drop-in center and mobile outreach program.
